Common Mistakes While Brushing Teeth | Ask Dentist in Laredo off Zapata Hwy

What can go wrong with brushing our teeth? Brushing seems like an easy task. After all, we have been doing it all our life. Well, you might regularly brush your teeth. But are you doing it correctly?
There are many ways with which you can improve your brushing. Following this guide can do wonders for your oral health and hygiene. So read along to avoid some common mistakes that people often make while brushing their teeth.

1 Avoid brushing too hard

Brushing your teeth can sweep away countless unwanted things attached to your teeth. But doing it too hard can also irritate the delicate lining of your gums. Moreover, if you brush your teeth vigorously, you might even erode the outside layer of your teeth, known as enamel. This can lead to cavities and several other oral health complications. To avoid all this trouble, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth gently.

2 Take your time… nice and slow

Most people hardly brush for 30 to 45 seconds maximum. This time is too short and won’t allow your toothpaste’s active ingredients to work effectively. For this reason, dentists recommend that you should brush your teeth for a full 2 minutes. So next time you brush, take care to brush every corner of your teeth, gums, and tongue.

3 Don’t forget to brush your tongue

Another common mistake that people often make is to forget cleaning their tongue. Your tongue can be a great habitat for bacteria to live. Over time, this can lead to bad breath and even infection that can spread to other parts of your mouth. So gently brush your tongue back and forth until you see a fleshy pink color.

4 Improve your brushing technique

Do you brush back-to-front or side-to-side? The best technique to brush your teeth is to do it in circular motions with your brush slightly tilting at an angle. This will clean your teeth more effectively and prevent scraping the sensitive tissues of your mouth.

5 Should you rinse after brushing?

While you brush your teeth, the toothpaste’s ingredients combine with the bristle’s mechanical action. This way, almost all the plaque and food debris in your mouth gets eliminated. But if you rinse right after you brush your teeth, you would be depriving the toothpaste of serving another important function. The toothpaste contains fluoride, meant to attach itself to your enamel and strengthen it. So instead of washing it right away off your teeth, spit it. You can rinse or drink water after waiting for 30 minutes when you brush.

6 Avoid using mouthwash right after brushing

After brushing and flossing, mouthwash is the third step to make sure your mouth is cleaned properly. However, dentists suggest using it at a different time instead of using it right after you brush. Just like rinsing with water, mouthwash can rinse away the fluoride off your teeth, which is necessary to strengthen your tooth enamel.

7 Visit your dentist regularly

Most people think brushing and flossing are enough when it comes to keeping good oral health. But this is not true. Regular dental visits are also an important part of your oral care routine. Besides professional cleaning, your dentist can diagnose and treat any dental issue that you might ignore before they get serious.
